This intermediate-level course offers respiratory therapists and other healthcare providers a review of detailed arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and various physiological processes essential for acid-base regulation including basic chemistry, lung function, hemodynamics and renal function.

Course Objectives

  • Relate the role of oxygen to the physiology of metabolism and acid-base balance.
  • Interpret arterial blood gas data using calculations to predict compensatory response.
  • Discuss respiratory center anatomy and the regulation of ventilatory pattern generation and explain physical principles that govern ventilation.
  • Identify the determinants of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, transport, and delivery.
  • Recognize the determinants of cardiac output and blood pressure regulation.
  • Discuss renal regulation of acid-base balance.

About the Author(s)

Traci Marin, PhD, MPH, RRT, RPGST, is an associate research professor and program director in the Department of Cardiopulmonary Sciences, Schools of Allied Health and Medicine, at Loma Linda University and program director of doctoral studies in health sciences at Trident University. She is also an adjunct researcher and advisor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, as well as the founder of Tranquility Community Health.

Beth Eliot, MS, RRT-NPS, is an independent facilitator for patient advocacy for the underprivileged in her immediate community. She received a master's degree from Georgetown University in biohazardous agents and emerging infectious diseases, a bachelor's degree in emergency medical care from Loma Linda University, and an associate's degree in respiratory therapy from Victor Valley College.

Amber Melendez, RCP, RRT, is currently working as a respiratory therapist for the Hesperia Unified School District, providing care to medically fragile students. She received her respiratory therapy education at Victor Valley College and has gained clinical experience in the areas of trauma, hyperbaric therapy, and emergency and intensive care.
