This advanced - level course is designed for respiratory therapists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who care for individuals receiving medication for respiratory conditions. This course explains that the important aspect of pharmacology is not to memorize each characteristic of individual medications, but rather to understand the individual pharmacologic classifications that these medications fall into. By understanding these classifications, the actions of newly approved medications will be better understood by practitioners. This course will enable respiratory therapists to stay current with relevant pharmacotherapy.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss general pharmacological principles.
  • Describe currently used adrenergic and anticholinergic bronchodilators and their modes of action.
  • Describe currently used anti-inflammatory agents and their modes of action.
  • Describe currently used mucolytic, anti-infective, and surfactant agents and their modes of action.
  • Identify currently used vasoconstrictive and vasodilatory agents and their modes of action.

About the Author(s)

Traci Marin, PhD, MPH, RRT, RPGST is a professor, program director for the respiratory therapy program at Victor Valley College. Dr. Marin is also an adjunct researcher and advisor in the Department of Medicine at John Shyy Lab at the University of California, San Diego as well as the founder of Tranquility Community Health. Dr. Marin received her PhD from the University of California, Riverside in biochemistry and molecular biology and her BS from Loma Linda University in emergency medical care.
