This course provides a history of the science and practice of yoga and the many physical and mental health benefits for nurses and patients. Yoga helps promote mind-body-spirit health and through consistent practice the benefits accrued are numerous. It is important to learn and practice yoga postures, proper breathing and meditation to help promote a balance of all three. People will join yoga classes with different objectives and it is important for nurses to be aware of local resources to guide patients. Various types of yoga will be discussed along with the importance of the role of a yoga teacher for safe practice.

About the Author(s)

Christina Jackson, PhD, MSN, APRN, APHN-BC, received both her bachelor of science in nursing and master of science in nursing with nurse practitioner specialty from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in interdisciplinary studies in holistic and integrative health-care from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Jackson is a professor and holistic curriculum coordinator for the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania. She practices, teaches, and uses many integrative healing strategies for self-care and clinical patient care. Dr. Jackson began practicing yoga as an adolescent and has been teaching continually for the past two decades in club fitness and academic settings, where she also teaches Pilates. Dr. Jackson is an award-winning author in the field of holistic nursing and served as the associate editor of the journal Holistic Nursing Practice: The Science of Health and Healing, for which she still serves on the editorial board. She has published many articles and book chapters pertaining to yoga and health and has often been asked to speak about applying yoga in clinical practice and self-care at medical and nursing conferences. She was honored to receive the American Holistic Nurses Association Holistic Nurse of the Year award in 2011.
