About the Course

Bullying and horizontal violence in the workplace occurs far too often. Whether it is between professionals of a single discipline or among different disciplines, the consequences of bullying and horizontal violence are the same.  This course provides an overview of horizontal violence, characteristics of both abusers and victims, and how to reduce the prevalence of horizontal violence in the workplace.  

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
  • Describe the phenomenon, incidence, and prevalence of horizontal violence.
  • Identify the characteristics of the victim and the perpetrator involved in the horizontal violence. 
  • Explain the causes and impact of horizontal violence.
  • Implement strategies to reduce and prevent horizontal violence.

About the Authors: 

Adrianne E. Avillion, D.Ed., RN, is an accomplished nursing professional development specialist and healthcare author. She earned her doctoral degree in adult education and her MSN from Penn State University and BSN from Bloomsburg University. Dr. Avillion has held a variety of nursing positions as a staff nurse in critical care and physical medicine and rehabilitation settings, with emphasis on neurological and mental health nursing, as well as a number of leadership roles in nursing professional development. She has published extensively and is a frequent presenter at conferences and conventions devoted to the specialty of continuing education and nursing professional development.  Dr. Avillion owns and is the CEO of Strategic Nursing Professional Development, a business that specializes in continuing education for healthcare professionals and consulting services in nursing professional development. Her most recent publications include The Path to Stress-Free Nursing Professional Development: 50 No-Nonsense Solutions to Everyday Challenges and Nursing Professional Development: A Practical Guide for Evidence-Based Education.

Kelly A. Crum, PhD(c), MSN, RN, is a nursing education consultant serving schools on accreditation and curriculum matters. She currently serves as an international nursing education consultant, including being the expert nurse consultant for Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences. With 25 years of nursing education experience, she has held various nursing positions in both the clinical and academic setting. Her passion for curriculum and expertise in teaching are the foundation for endeavors of educating the educator. This passion is reflected in her writing and conference topics.  Currently, she has 30+ workbooks published with Elsevier, primarily in the areas of maternity, pediatrics, and simulation case studies. Her most recent conference topics include competency-based education in Egypt, the professor’s role in BSN education in Guatemala, building the nurse educator’s capacity to instruct students in managing chronic care across the lifespan in China, and clinical evaluation best practices in the United States. In practice, her focus is on international humanitarian work and community volunteerism as well as her role as a hospice and palliative care nurse.
