About the Course

Nurse practitioners who prescribe controlled substances have a great responsibility to ensure patients receive the care they need while preventing their prescriptions from becoming a source of abuse or diversion. This course serves to provide an overview of the safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances in Wisconsin.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
  • Describe the current trends in substance use disorder (SUD), new criteria DSM-5 used in evaluating SUD, and diversion, including common types of diversion, drug classes with high potential for misuse, and prescriber precautions to minimize drug diversion.
  • Explain the laws pertaining to prescribing of controlled substances, including medication schedules, prescription-filling rules, and registration requirements.
  • Discuss the management of pain, including evaluation, treatment, medications used, and when to refer.
  • Describe steps necessary to ensure safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances including professional documentation, patient-provider agreements, informed consent, and prescription drug monitoring programs.

About the Author

Jennifer Gruber, MSN, APNP,  has been a Wisconsin-based medical professional for 20 years and a nurse practitioner since 2014. She has experience as a clinician in inpatient and outpatient settings and has worked as a nursing instructor. In addition, she has expertise in substance abuse treatment and prevention, medically assisted treatment programs for pregnant/postpartum women, and is certified as a buprenorphine prescriber for opioid use disorders.

Robyn Caldwell, DNP, FNP-BC, earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Samford University in nursing administration with an emphasis in nursing education in 2013. Her doctoral work focused on staff development among newly licensed nurses in a psychiatric setting. She earned a post-master’s certificate as a family nurse practitioner from Delta State University in 2003, a master’s degree in Nursing Administration (MSN) in 1996, and a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degree in 1990 from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Caldwell has worked in a variety of healthcare settings throughout her 32-year career including adult and pediatric emergency nursing, nursing administration, and nursing education (LPN to DNP) in both the community college and university settings.
