About the Course: 
In this course, the clinical presentation of lymphedema as well as the management and treatment of upper/lower extremity and head/neck lymphedema. The participant will learn techniques to identify patients at risk for developing edema and lymphedema. Topics include anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, why/when to refer the client to other healthcare professionals, and what to communicate to the rest of the multidisciplinary team members. This course provides therapeutic interventions for lymphedema and edema management. Participants are introduced to the components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), including manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, skin care, and exercise. In addition, contraindications to treatment, nutrition, circumferential measurements, compression garments, and documentation and billing are discussed.

This course is approved by the Florida Board of Massage Therapy as a hands-on credit, relevant to and focused on massage therapy techniques, skills and protocols.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify clinical presentations of lymphedema.
  2. Select key components of lymphedema assessment.
  3. Identify effective treatment techniques for general edema and lymphedema management.
  4. Identify the impact edema has on rehabilitation outcomes and the healing process.
  5. Recognize indications and contraindications for edema interventions.
  6. Recognize proper reimbursement and documentation principles associated with edema management.

About the Author:
Neely Sullivan, MPT, CLT-LANA, CDP has worked with diverse client populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric in a variety of clinical settings. These experiences and multiple courses on the topic have allowed her to treat and develop client care programs for clients living with these conditions. She has served in multiple levels of regional and corporate management positions. In these positions, Neely has developed policies and worked closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure that clients living with lymphedema and/or wounds have opportunity to attain their highest level of function and quality of life. She is a certified lymphedema therapist and has most recently been responsible for the identification, implementation and evaluation of clinical programs in long-term care settings. • Neely currently provides educational support to 12,000+ therapists nationwide as Director of Education for Select Rehabilitation. Neely has lectured nationally and at the state level on the topics of Lymphedema Management, Documentation, Wound Care Management, and The Role of Rehabilitation with the LTC Client. She has authored publications focusing on edema and lymphedema management. Neely conducts audits, quality improvement planning, and clinical training to Select Rehabilitation employees and customers monthly. She is a member of the APTA including the Clinical Electrophysiology and Wound Management section and Geriatric section.
