The Epidemic of Non-Fatal Strangulation

About the Course
The literature reports little research in examining strangulation related to Intimate Partner Violence or Sexual Assault, yet clinically, so much more is being learned. This important forensic video course carefully presents the dynamics of non-fatal strangulation related to domestic and rape situations. Because of the dynamics of excessive external pressure being placed on the individual's neck, the clinical history and presenting signs and symptoms often underrepresented the significance of injury to the individual. This comprehensive 2-hour course presents the significance of the problem, clinical evaluation, diagnostic requirements, and ongoing care. Additional resources are also available to the clinician.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
  • Explain how asphyxia through strangulation occurs and the trauma it causes victims.
  • Illustrate the amount of pressure needed to occlude the jugular and carotid artery on the neck.
  • Compare several visible symptoms that a person might have after being strangled with someone who has no symptoms.
  • Apply best practices for improving care provided to strangulation patients.
