Course Overview

This course reviews the complexities of the endocrine system, explaining its vital role in maintaining physiological equilibrium. Explore the creation, release, and functions of hormones governing crucial bodily processes such as fluid-electrolyte balance, metabolism, reproduction, growth, stress response, and mood regulation. Investigate the diseases and disorders impacting endocrine glands, hormones, and receptors, particularly adrenal, pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, and parathyroid dysfunction. This course provides healthcare professionals with the latest information about select endocrine system diseases and disorders, the pathophysiology of these clinical problems, and related clinical care.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system.
  • Examine pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and clinical care for adults with disorders of the adrenal gland.
  • Examine the pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and clinical care for adults with disorders of the pituitary gland.
  • Examine the pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and clinical care for adults with disorders of the thyroid gland.
  • Examine pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and clinical care for adults with disorders of the pancreas.
  • Examine pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and clinical care for adults with disorders of the parathyroid glands.
  • Analyze the interconnectivity of the glands and hormones that comprise the endocrine system.

About the Author/Presenter 
June D. Thompson, DrPH, MSN, RN, FAEN, is an educator, clinician, researcher, and writer. She has served as the director of education and research for University Hospitals in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as well as the director of research and development for Florida Hospitals in Orlando Florida. In these capacities, she helped to champion standards of clinical practice based on evidence. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate nursing at Ohio State University and the University of Texas, Houston. Dr. Thompson earned her baccalaureate degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve University, her master’s in nursing from Ohio State University, and her doctorate in public health, injury epidemiology, from the University of Texas, Houston.
