About Course #N1847

Release Date: September 27, 2017

Expiration Date: September 30, 2020

Skin cancer is a major public health problem. There are more than 5.4 million cases of basal cell skin cancer, squamous cell skin cancer, Merkel cell skin cancer, keratoacanthoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, and cutaneous lymphoma skin cancer annually, and the incidence rates of melanoma have been increasing for at least the past 30 years. However, most basal cell skin cancer, squamous cell skin cancer, Merkel cell skin cancers, keratoacanthomas, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, and cutaneous lymphoma skin cancers can be cured if the cancer is detected and treated early.

The purpose of this course is to provide nurses with an overview of the prevalence and management of skin cancer. This course will enable nurses to better understand skin cancer and the nursing care needs of patients and their families. Topics discussed include an overview of the epidemiology of skin cancer, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, risk assessment, prevention strategies, strengths and limitations of detection strategies, diagnosis, staging, and standard treatment modalities, including surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. A case study at the end of the course will help to illustrate the content.

This course is an extract of, and should not be taken in conjunction with course #N1755 - Cancer in Women, 3rd Edition.
