This course is designed to educate acute registered nurse practitioners who want to practice evidence-based care when treating patients with controlled substances.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Identify the various types of pain.
  • Describe the role of patient-centered care in the treatment of patients with pain.
  • Discuss evaluation of pain and establishment of treatment goals.
  • Recall appropriate patient counseling points on controlled substances.
  • Distinguish between low-, medium-, and high-risk patients when prescribing opioids.
  • Identify methods to monitor opioid compliance.
  • Describe the ethical issues with prescribing controlled substances.
  • Calculate the appropriate dose when converting opioid products.
  • Summarize the legal aspects of controlled substance prescribing.
  • List the benefits and risks of using medical marijuana to treat patients.

About the Author:
Katie Blair, PharmD, RPh, is a pharmacist and freelance writer specializing in pharmacy education. She works as a consultant pharmacist in Vancouver, Washington, serving long-term care facilities in the area. She also has over six years of experience working as a staff pharmacist at a community pharmacy in Seattle. Dr. Blair graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 2009 with a doctor of pharmacy degree.
