About the Course:
This course is designed to increase nurses’ knowledge of recommended pediatric immunizations in order to improve patient education and adherence to immunization schedules. Vaccine recommendations for children ages 18 years old and younger are discussed, including the diseases that vaccines prevent, the schedule for administration, safety, and effectiveness of vaccines.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Identify 12 vaccinations recommended by the CDC in the 2019 child and adolescent immunization schedule for ages 18 years and younger.
  • Identify transmission of infections that are covered in the 12 discussed pediatric vaccines.
  • Describe symptoms of infections that are covered in the 12 discussed pediatric vaccinations.
  • Discuss vaccine preventable diseases in children in the United States.
  • Recall the effectiveness of some pediatric vaccines.
  • Identify potential adverse effects of vaccines.
  • Discuss information required to be given to patients prior to receiving a vaccine.
  • Describe the Vaccine Adverse Effects Reporting System.
  • Identify elements of vaccination documentation.

About the Author:
Shellie D. Hill DNP, FNP-BC, is an assistant professor in the MSN-NP program at Saint Louis University, where she teaches the clinical courses for the family nurse practitioner students, and she also teaches advanced health assessment with clinical decision making and health promotion to MSN students. She has been a practicing family nurse practitioner for 19 years and an RN for 25 years. Most of her practice has been in primary care, but she also has experience in urgent care and cardiology. Her current practice is in corporate health.

How to receive credit:
  • Read the entire course online or in print which requires a 3-hour commitment of time.
  • Depending on your state requirements you will be asked to complete either:
    • An affirmation that you have completed the educational activity.
    • A mandatory test (a passing score of 70 percent is required). Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
