About the Course:
Concussions can be a challenging injury to diagnose, evaluate, and treat. Nurses are key members of the multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals managing individuals with concussion. Within the pediatric population, nurses work closely with children, their families, schools, and coaches. It is critical that nurses in a variety of clinical settings are proficient in the skill set necessary to adequately screen, examine, treat, and provide anticipatory guidance surrounding this complex and multifaceted diagnosis. This course is designed for nurses who work with individuals with acute and chronic concussions and for healthcare providers who have a basic knowledge of concussion and concussion management. The course provides a comprehensive evidenced-based understanding of the complex nature of concussion; the pathophysiology of concussion; the physiologic dysfunction that may result; an understanding of the shift in recommended timelines for rest and return to activity; and the tools necessary for evidenced-based examination and treatment.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss the history, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of concussion.
  • Discuss the common signs and symptoms of concussion.
  • Explain key components of the physical examination, including the appropriate tests and measures and how the findings impact prognosis.
  • List the differential diagnoses of concussion.
  • Design appropriate patient-centered interventions to address the key concussion symptoms and activity limitations.
  • Describe the role of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Explain the prognosis of concussion in pediatric patients.
  • Discuss the signs or symptoms that warrant referral to the emergency department or to specialists.
  • Explain the possible long-term consequences of concussion.
  • Discuss concussion prevention strategies and initiatives.

About the Author:
Margaret Hughes, MSN, RN, CPRNP-PC, is a pediatric nurse practitioner who graduated from the Yale School of Nursing in 2016 with a concentration in global health. Her interest in healthcare started at a young age when she had several opportunities to shadow doctors in France and Belgium. She currently works in student health at a large university in Boston and is obtaining a postgraduate certificate in psychiatry-mental health. Before that she worked at community-based and school-based health centers providing primary care to high-risk, medically underserved populations. She also has experience as a nurse and has worked in a private pediatric clinic in Connecticut and at an overnight summer camp in New York.
