About the CourseThis course provides nurses caring for patients with an ostomy, or ostomates, with a synopsis of incontinent urinary and fecal diversion, and serves as an ostomy management primer. The course includes a review of relevant gastrointestinal and urinary system anatomy, disease processes or conditions requiring the surgical formation of an ostomy as well as the current best practices related to patient care.

- Describe fecal and urinary diversions and circumstances requiring diversion construction.
- Discuss postoperative ostomy assessment, management, and documentation.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of ostomy complications and relevant nursing interventions.
- Discuss education of patients adapting to life with an ostomy.
Yvonne L. Weideman, DNP, RN, CNE, CWON, CFCN, has more than 30 years of diverse nursing experience in home care, home infusion, nursing administration, and nursing education. Currently, Dr. Weideman is a full-time clinical associate professor at Duquesne University. Her primary area of clinical focus is wound and ostomy nursing, and she is board certified as a wound, ostomy, continence, and foot care nurse. Dr. Weideman earned her BSN from Duquesne University, her MBA from Robert Morris University, and her DNP from Duquesne University.
