About the Course
This advanced-level course is designed for healthcare providers with a desire to learn more about the development of the fetus, changes that occur during or shortly after birth, and how to assess and treat the newborn. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Explain the five stages of lung development and fetal circulation. 
  • Explain the purpose of fetal lung fluid and fetal breathing. 
  • Explain the role of surfactant in lung mechanics and how to test for lung maturity.    
  • Recognize the fetal circulatory pathway and the basic anatomical differences between the adult and the neonate pulmonary and circulatory systems. 
  • Recognize different assessments of fetal growth and development.    
  • Identify the processes during labor and delivery and for the newborn to transition to extrauterine life. 
  • Explain the basic equipment needs and assessments for the delivery of the high-risk infant.? 

About the Author/Presenter
Heather O’Connell has been a respiratory therapist for 17 years. She has worked in many different areas of the field, such as critical care, pulmonary function and bronchoscopy, and labor and delivery. Heather earned her associate’s in science from Edison State College, her bachelor’s in cardiopulmonary sciences from the University of Central Florida, and her master’s in healthcare administration from Southern New Hampshire University. She worked as a clinical preceptor from 2010 until 2015, when she became a full-time director of clinical education for respiratory care at Florida Southwestern State College. She has taught various classes such as Assessment, Mechanical Ventilation, and Therapeutics.  

How to Receive Credit

  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination.  A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention. 
  • Note to Nursing professionals: Depending on your state requirements, you will be asked to either affirm that you have completed the course, or you will be required to complete the Post-test included in the course.
  • Provide required personal information and payment information.
  • Complete the mandatory course evaluation.
