Course Overview
This course is tailored for healthcare practitioners seeking to broaden their expertise in providing care to individuals living with dementia. Psychologists, counselors, social workers, nurses, therapy professionals and other practitioners will delve into the complex definitions of dementia, exploring its numerous subtypes and differential diagnoses. The course will analyze the distinct stages of dementia, offering critical insights for appropriate assessment, tailored interventions, and understanding the disease's progression. Recognizing the importance of culturally responsive care, participants will examine how diversity, socioeconomic status (SES), and other intersecting identities significantly influence the experience of dementia.
The course will equip learners with effective communication techniques and explore strategies for building strong, supportive relationships with individuals living with dementia. Additionally, it will cover evidence-based psychosocial approaches for managing behavioral and emotional challenges and highlight innovative therapies designed to enhance quality of life. Recognizing the immense contributions of caregivers, the course will address their unique needs and explore strategies to reduce stress and promote well-being. Finally, participants will explore advocacy and policy change, empowering them to become champions for those affected by dementia in their communities.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Define dementia and its various subtypes.
- Analyze the biological, psychological, occupational and social factors contributing to dementia.
- Identify the stages of dementia and their impact on cognitive function, behavior, and emotions.
- Analyze the intersection of diversity, socioeconomic status (SES), and intersectionality in dementia diagnosis, treatment, and care.
- Produce culturally competent communication skills for interacting with individuals with dementia and their families.
- Apply evidence-based psychosocial interventions for managing dementia symptoms and promoting well-being.
- Demonstrate the need for policy and systemic changes that address disparities in dementia care.
About the Author/Presenter
Dr. Jameca Woody Cooper is a board-certified counseling psychologist, Fulbright scholar, criminal psychology consultant, and TEDx speaker. For almost 20 years, Dr. Woody-Cooper has been a beacon of hope through her practice, Emergence Psychological Services, guiding St. Louis residents on their journeys to mental wellness.
