About the Course:
This course provides an overview of common pediatric mental health issues, including descriptions of the signs and symptoms for particular conditions, indicators of a psychiatric emergency, and appropriate treatment interventions for each case presented. Early diagnosis and intervention can critically affect positive outcomes of pediatric mental health disorders, making the accurate and comprehensive assessment of the pediatric patient’s mental health a crucial component of each pediatric examination.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Describe the key components of a holistic pediatric mental health assessment.
  • Discuss mental disorders found within the pediatric population.
  • Identify psychiatric emergencies in children and adolescents.

About the Author:   

Jean Ivey, PhD, ARNP, PNP-PC, FAANP, retired as an associate professor from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2013 and currently works part-time with pediatric home health clients. She taught pediatric nursing at the bachelor of science and master of science in nursing levels and authored funded grants that developed acute and combined acute and primary care pediatric nurse practitioner tracks for master of science in nursing students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She worked with patients in a psychiatric/mental health facility on a child/adolescent unit. Dr. Ivey also had a faculty practice at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s parent-child clinic. She was a member of a research study about chronic illness in children and helped begin a support group for the families of chronically ill children.
