About the Course  

Testosterone is considered the quintessential hormone for men’s health. Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone present in both men and women. The absence of testosterone can produce significant health alterations in men. The purpose of this course is to provide nurses with information on the production, synthesis, and physiological effects of testosterone. In addition, this course presents information on methods of testosterone assessment and clinical therapeutic interventions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:  

  • Explain two physiological effects of testosterone.
  • Identify two aspects of a symptom-specific testosterone physical examination.
  • Describe one testosterone-related health alteration.
  • Name three routes of testosterone replacement therapy.
  • Describe two outcomes of testosterone replacement therapy.

About the Author

Demetrius J. Porche, DNS, PhD, FNP, APRN, PCC, ANEF, FACHE, FAANP, FAAN, is a dean and a professor at Louisiana State University Health School of Nursing and is the founding editor and editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Men’s Health. He is certified as a family nurse practitioner and a community/public health clinical nurse specialist. He has written three textbooks: Epidemiology for the Advanced Practice Nurse: A Population Health Approach, Health Policy: Application for Nurses and Other Healthcare Professionals, and Public and Community Health Nursing Practice: A Population-Based Approach. Dr. Porche has published extensively on men’s health, leadership, administration, HIV/AIDS, and primary care. He has held leadership positions at the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Southern Nursing Research Society, Southern Regional Educational Board Council on Collegiate Education in Nursing, American Assembly for Men in Nursing, and American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
