About the Course:
Health care professionals are in a unique position to identify and report dependent adult abuse. This course is designed to educate nurses on dependent adult abuse dynamics, indicators and risk factors, and prevention initiatives.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Define terms related to dependent adult abuse.
  • Discuss the prevalence of dependent adult abuse in the United States.
  • Recognize the risk factors, indicators, consequences, and protective factors for dependent adult abuse.
  • Explain common characteristics of adult abuse perpetrators.
  • Explain barriers to recognition and reporting of suspected dependent adult abuse.
  • Describe assessment and documentation of dependent abuse indicators, risk factors, and care of the dependent adult with a physical injury and suspected physical abuse.
  • Describe the role of the forensic nurse in identifying and reporting dependent adult abuse.
  • Identify strategies to prevent dependent adult abuse.
  • Discuss the role of the nurse as a mandated reporter.

About the Author:
Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, is an accomplished nursing professional development specialist and health care author. She earned her doctoral degree in adult education and her MS in nursing from Penn State University, and a BSN from Bloomsburg University. Dr. Avillion has held a variety of nursing positions as a staff nurse in critical care and physical medicine and rehabilitation settings, as well as numerous leadership roles in professional development.
