Managing Ostomies
Course Overview
This course is designed to provide a thorough overview of ostomy management and build confidence and expertise in caring for ostomy patients. Learners will gain valuable knowledge of gastrointestinal pathophysiology, the various types of ostomies, common complications, and best practices for ostomy-changing procedures and ongoing care. Participants will also learn to advocate for ostomy patients' well-being and quality of life.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the different types of ostomies, their indications, and their management.
- Discuss postoperative ostomy assessment, management, and documentation.
- Identify potential complications and implement interventions to improve patient outcomes.
- Apply holistic care to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of patients with ostomies.
- Summarize effective patient education for ostomy care, including appliance management, complication prevention, and stoma health.
About the Author/Presenter
Abbie Schmitt, MSN-Ed, RN is a nurse educator with nursing experience in internal medicine, inpatient rehab, cardiology, emergency medicine, humanitarian relief, and associate degree in nursing (and) nursing programs. She graduated with an ADN in 2007, a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) in 2012, and a masters degree in nursing—nursing education (MSN-Ed) from Liberty University in 2019.
