About the Course

The state of Florida has laws and rules to regulate nursing practice to protect the public and preserve the health, safety, and welfare of the people in the state. The Florida Board of Nursing requires every LPN, RN, and APN applying for relicensure in Florida to complete an approved 2 contact hour continuing education course every 2 years.  This course provides information about laws and regulations that govern nursing and how any new changes affect nursing practice and meets the Florida Laws and Rules continuing education requirement for nursing relicensure.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the learner should be able to:
  • Identify two chapters of Florida statutes (laws) that regulate the practice of nursing in Florida.
  • Describe three levels of nursing licenses in Florida and the general scope of practice of each.
  • Compare and contrast a single-state license and a multi-state license under the Nurse Licensure Compact in Florida.
  • Identify the continuing education requirements for Florida nursing license renewal.
  • Identify grounds for disciplinary action noted in Rule 64B9-8.005 of the Florida Administrative Code.
  • Describe factors to consider when delegating nursing duties.
  • Initiate a change in practice to maintain accountability for individual scope of nursing practice in Florida.

About the Author

Rosann M. Spiegel, JD, DNAP, CRNA, APRNhas been a certified registered nurse anesthetist since 1987 and a licensed attorney in the state of Florida since 2005. Currently, she is the program director and an assistant professor at the Florida Gulf Coast University Nurse Anesthesiology program in Fort Myers, Florida. Dr. Spiegel earned a diploma in nursing from the St. Francis General Hospital School of Professional Nursing in 1980; a diploma in nurse anesthesia from the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 1986; a juris doctor degree, magna cum laude, from the Florida International University College of Law in 2004; and a doctor of nurse anesthesia practice degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013. From 2005 to 2006, Dr. Spiegel served as an assistant public defender for the law offices of the public defender for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, and from 2006 to 2011, she was in private practice as a trial lawyer, primarily representing claimants in disability insurance disputes in state and federal courts. She has been an invited speaker on a variety of legal, ethical, and clinical topics at local, state, and national professional meetings.

How to receive credit

  • Depending on your state requirements you will be asked to complete either:
    • An affirmation that you have completed the educational activity.
    • A mandatory test (a passing score of 70 percent is required). Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
