About the Course
This 4 hour course provides evidence and strategies to help rural nurses, and those aspiring to create their nursing practice in a rural setting, to understand how they might help to close the gaps that create inequities in rural health. This introductory course provides information on the roles and responsibilities of rural nurses in five practice settings that are common across states, reservations, and island territories. 

Learning Outcomes
Upon Completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the four components that determine health and healthcare conditions in rural settings. 
  • Identify and evaluate the conditions contributing to inequities in rural healthcare.
  • Identify and evaluate the conditions contributing to inequities in rural health.
  • Articulate their role and responsibilities as a rural nurse.
  • Analyze through a self-reflection process how they might advance their competencies as a rural nurse.
  • Participate in teams and with governance, patients, and communities as they seek to improve the health of rural individuals and populations through improved healthcare.
  • Describe the six competencies of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project that can be applied to rural nursing practice.
About the Author
Michele Sare, DNP, MSN, RN
, has been an RN for 47 years. She is an author and educator who has focused her career on advancing health in rural and resource-poor communities in nine states and five countries. She served for 12 years as a teaching professor in the U.S. and taught nursing in rural Haiti and rural Mongolia. With over 30 years of experience teaching and training in the healthcare field, she has dedicated her career to advancing education as a pathway to reduce disparities and inequities. That work intensified after surviving and serving as a lead at the heart of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti as she was witness to true disparity and the need to help advance nursing education. The focus of her work in the past 22 years has been to advance health and healthcare through education with a focus on rural and global health. 

How to Receive Credit  
  • Read the entire course online or in print which requires a 4-hour commitment of time. 
  • At the end of the course, answer the Yes/No Affirmation question to indicate that you have completed the educational activity.
  • Specific to Florida: A mandatory Final Examination with a passing score of 70% or higher is required. Exam questions link content to the course Learning Objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
