This course focuses on helping nurses increase their knowledge of infection control practices and to use that knowledge to improve patient care and decrease infection incidence.

  • Define terminology related to infection prevention and control.
  • Describe the infectious disease process.
  • Explain the impact of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) on healthcare facilities and patients.
  • Discuss occupational exposure to infectious agents among healthcare personnel.
  • Discuss immunization recommendations in the U.S.
  • Explain the pathophysiology of vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Evaluate treatment initiatives, including prevention strategies, for various vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Identify nursing interventions related to vaccine-preventable diseases.

Adrianne E. Avillion, D.Ed., RN, is an accomplished nursing professional development specialist and published healthcare education author. She is the owner of Strategic Nursing Professional Development, a business devoted to helping nurses maintain competency and enhance their professional growth and development. Dr. Avillion earned her doctoral degree in Adult Education and her Master of Science (MS) from Penn State University, along with a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Bloomsburg University.
