About the Course:
Because of the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease, it is likely that many nurses and advanced practice nurses (APN) will encounter patients using antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications in their practice. Furthermore, some clinicians working in specialized fields will have patients requiring thrombolytic therapy. Although these medications are quite useful and play an important role in contemporary medical practice, there are potentially dangerous adverse events and hazards associated with their use. In order to best balance these positive and negative attributes, it is critical that nurses develop an understanding of how they work and how to optimize the management of their patients who depend on them. This educational program is designed to provide an overview of the safe use of antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and thrombolytic medications.

- Distinguish between the efficacy of aspirin for the prevention of primary versus secondary cardiovascular events.
- Identify one population of patients in which aspirin is contraindicated.
- Understand the meaning of the term prodrug as it applies to clopidogrel.
- Appreciate one advantage of low-molecular weight heparin compared to unfractionated heparin.
- State a contraindication to the use of low-molecular weight heparin.
- Name a type of food that should be consumed consistently, or not at all, by patients using warfarin.
- State an off-label use of Tenecteplase.
- Identify the most common adverse event associated with antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and thrombolytic medications.
