About the Course

Bullying and horizontal violence in the workplace occurs far too often.  Whether between professionals of a single discipline or among different disciplines, the consequences of bullying and horizontal violence are the same. This course will provide an overview of horizontal violence, characteristics of both abusers and victims, and how to reduce the prevalence of horizontal violence in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe the phenomenon of horizontal violence.
  • Discuss the incidence and prevalence of horizontal violence.
  • Discuss how and why horizontal violence victims are chosen by their abusers.
  • Identify the characteristics of persons who commit horizontal violence.
  • Explain the causes of horizontal violence.
  • Analyze the impact of horizontal violence.
  • Implement strategies to reduce and prevent horizontal violence.

About the Author:

Adrianne Avillion, DEd, RN

Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, is an accomplished nursing professional development specialist and health care author. She earned her doctoral degree in adult education and her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Penn State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Bloomsburg University. Dr.Avillion has held a variety of nursing positions as a staff nurse in critical care and physical medicine and rehabilitation settings with emphasis on neurological and mental health nursing, as well as a number of leadership roles in nursing professional development. She has published extensively and is a frequent presenter at conferences and conventions devoted to the specialty of continuing education and nursing professional development.
