Gun violence is a significant problem.  Gun violence is not created in isolation but develops from community and societal issues.  There are antecedents and predictors of gun violence incidence and perpetrators.  It is important for health care workers in all settings to recognize the potential gun violence situations and the consequences of gun violence.  Developing a plan for active shooter situations is a vital to prepare healthcare personnel to cope before, during, and after an active shooter situation.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Define gun violence.
  • Discuss the consequences of gun violence on individuals, community, and society.
  • Identify the victims of gun violence.
  • Recognize the antecedents of gun violence.
  • Recognize the predictors of gun violence.
  • Analyze the cost of gun violence for individuals, communities, and society.
  • Examine ways to prevent gun violence.
  • Discuss gun violence prevention.
  • Discuss the incidence of gun violence in the U.S.
  • Identify characteristics of a potential active shooter.
  • Create ideas for an Active Shooter Response plan.
  • Analyze issues surrounding an Active Shooter Response plan in relationship to ethical issues surrounding movers who cannot be moved/evacuated.
  • Examine Run, Hide, Fight active shooter response options.
  • Evaluate the individual and institution needs following a shooting.

About the Author:
Teresa Sienkiewicz, Ed.D, RN

Dr. Teresa Sienkiewicz, Ed.D, RN has been working in healthcare for 30 years as a Registered Nurse and nursing professor at the baccalaureate and masters level.  During her 30 years in healthcare, she has worked in many patient care areas including ICU, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.  As an ICU nurse, she has cared for many gunshot patients and their families in the Detroit metro area.
