While there are different types of workplace violence (WPV), this course speaks to WPV between patients and staff.  The case study and research presented is based on the Emergency Department environment, but workplace violence is seen in many different healthcare environments and is applicable to all healthcare providers. This course reviews the current evidence surrounding WPV and revolves around actual WPV cases and lessons learned. 

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this webinar course, the learner should be able to:
  • Describe risks for workplace violence in the emergency department.
  • Discuss workplace violence issues in the emergency department.
  • Apply current evidence and lessons learned from a case study to evoke positive change in the workplace.

About the Author:
Sharon D. Breidt, MSN, RN, CEN, NREMT

Sharon D. Breidt, MSN, RN, CEN, NREMT is currently a nursing professor at River Valley Community College in New Hampshire. She earned her MSN from Walden University and her BSN from Trenton State College.  She is a passionate nurse educator with 35 years of varied nursing experience. Ms. Breidt is a certified instructor for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).  She is a certified emergency nurse and was named the Emergency Nurse Association (ENA) featured member of the month in June 2017. She is a strong advocate for patient-centered care and teamwork.
