About the Course:
The goal of this course is to provide nurses with comprehensive content on trauma nursing care, including mechanisms of injury, common injuries seen, and resuscitation and management of traumatically injured patients. The course serves as a reference for trauma registered nurses working in emergency departments and trauma care units and for those practicing in non-trauma clinical areas who desire to know more about trauma care.

  • Demonstrate a general knowledge of trauma care and the role of the trauma team.
  • Apply knowledge regarding the initial assessment of the trauma patient.
  • Select appropriate interventions for the nursing management of the airway, ventilation, and oxygenation in the trauma patient.
  • Compare and contrast four types of shock.
  • Differentiate among the different causes and types of head trauma.
  • Apply knowledge regarding the assessment of and interventions for the patient with thoracic and neck trauma.
  • Apply knowledge regarding the assessment of and interventions for the patient with abdominal and pelvic trauma.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding the assessment of and appropriate interventions for the patient with spinal cord and vertebral column trauma.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding the assessment of and appropriate interventions for the patient with musculoskeletal trauma.
  • Differentiate among approaches to trauma care for special populations.
  • Evaluate the need for transition of care for the trauma patient to the appropriate level of care.

About the Author:
Justin Milici, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, CPN, TCRN, CCRN, FAEN, has over 34 years of experience in nursing with clinical backgrounds in emergency, trauma, pediatrics, and nursing education. Justin has served in roles such as staff nurse, trauma resource nurse, trauma outreach education and injury prevention coordinator, education specialist, and clinical educator. Currently, Justin is clinical nurse editor with Elsevier and oversees the Emergency Nursing collection of the Elsevier Clinical Skills products. Justin has worked in Level I and Level II trauma centers, as well as two regional burn centers. He is an active member of the Emergency Nurses Association, Society of Trauma Nurses, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Justin has served as a contributing author for Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course, Trauma Nursing Core Course, Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses, and Sheehy’s Manual of Emergency Care. He is a frequent speaker at the Emergency Nurses Association annual conference, and holds current certifications in emergency nursing, critical care nursing, pediatric emergency nursing, pediatric nursing, and trauma nursing. Justin is also a Fellow of the Academy of Emergency Nursing.
