Cultural Competency in Healthcare: A Contemporary Perspective

About this Course
Cultural competency is not a measured achievement but rather a continual awareness of implicit personal biases toward others.  Implicit biases are learned unconscious views about particular people. This video aims to assist the learner in recognizing and reducing unintentional preconceptions.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this video, participants will be able to: 
  • Define key concepts in cultural competency, implicit bias, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Analyze evidence-based data that presents cultural beliefs and determinants of health care amongst the broad spectrum of cultures practices.
  • Evaluate influences on healthcare from various cultural backgrounds including race, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ, and religion.
  • Consider cultural determinants of the military and veteran population.
  • Discuss cultural influence and health disparities among persons with disabilities.
About the Author
is a Fitzgerald Faculty member. She presents the Fitzgerald Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam Review & Advanced Practice Update for family, adult-gerontology primary care, adult-gerontology acute care, and psychiatric-mental health. She also teaches pathophysiology and pharmacology courses. Dr. Miller is certified as an adult-gerontology acute care, adult-gerontology primary care, family, and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She practices in rural health with NextGen Family Care Clinic and iCarePsychiatry in Las Vegas, NV. Dr. Miller is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and a clinical professor at the Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions, Philadelphia, PA. Additionally, Dr. Miller is the APRN consultant/investigator to the Nevada State Board of Nursing. Dr. Miller has presented a wide variety of pharmacology and clinical topics at local and national conferences, including the National Conference of Nurse Practitioners, AANP, and the University  of Colorado Annual Nurse Practitioner Symposium. In addition, Dr. Miller conducts workshops in collaboration with other Fitzgerald faculty on suturing for primary and urgent care. 

How to Receive Credit
  • View the entire recording or read the transcript in print online which requires a 2-hour commitment of time.  
  • At the end of the course, answer the Yes/No Affirmation question to indicate that you have completed the educational activity.
  • Specific to Florida: A mandatory Final Examination with a passing score of 70% or higher is required. Exam questions link content to the course Learning Objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
  • Provide required personal and payment information.
  • Complete the mandatory course evaluation.
  • Print your Certificate of Completion.
