About the Course:
This course will discuss the disparity among healthcare outcomes in cultural minorities and the goals of Healthy People and recommendations of the Office of Minority Health, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and multiple entities for culturally congruent healthcare. Additionally, it will allow reflection on the participant’s personal cultural beliefs and assumptions of health and provide recommendations for the development of a culturally sensitive outlook. This course meets the educational requirements of HB 756 for Maryland nurses and explores the topics of race, religion, sexual orientation and gender, the effect that lack of recognition of differences can have on health outcomes, along with methods to overcome these disparities.

About the Author:
Cheryl Jackson DNP, FNP-CA, a nurse for over 30 years, her clinical nursing experience ranges from medical-surgical ICU to telemetry and PACU. Her APN practice experience is in family practice, urgent care, and most recently adult primary care with Volunteers in Medicine in rural PA. Dr. Jackson is on the nursing faculty at Bloomsburg University and teaches advanced pharmacology and diagnosis and management to nurse practitioner students. Her interests are healthcare disparity, in particular rural populations, sexual minorities, and substance abuse.
