About the Course

This course provides a detailed review of the pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for advanced practice nurses who have responsibilities that encompass all aspects of primary and specialized care.  Causes, associated symptoms, complications and courses of treatment are presented.  Specific details on diagnostic measures and medications are also included.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Identify the leading cause of COPD.
  • Describe three symptoms of COPD.
  • Compare and contrast the elasticity of healthy and COPD-afflicted lung tissue.
  • Name a complication associated with COPD.
  • List three tools useful to a proper diagnosis of COPD.
  • State one distinguishing factor between albuterol and salmeterol.
  • Describe why theophylline may be effective in the treatment of COPD at doses less than that used for asthma.
  • State a risk of prophylactic antibiotic usage.
  • Describe nursing considerations for teaching patients about COPD.
