Evidence indicates that many risk factors of childhood obesity can be identified during the period of conception to 2 years of age. It is critical that nurses working with children and families understand the nutritional needs of children in each developmental stage to positively affect prevention efforts and promote healthy eating patterns early in life. This course reviews factors from the prenatal period through late adolescence that contribute to obesity and challenges faced when promoting healthy nutrition with each age group. Food choices, modeling behaviors and socio-cultural and environmental influences are discussed. Evidence-based treatment approaches are presented.

About the Author(s)
Judi Daniels, PhD, APRN, completed her master of science in nursing/family nurse practitioner program at Michigan State University and earned a PhD in nursing at the University of Kentucky in 2004. Throughout her nursing career, she has had a variety of clinical experiences. She is dual board certified in family medicine and pediatrics and is on the faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. Her interest in obesity across the age span began in 2000 when she became aware of the growing problem in her clinical practice. Since that time, she has published on the topic, has presented at several state conferences, and has chaired doctoral projects on child and adult obesity. She was recognized in 2014 as an outstanding nurse educator for the state of Kentucky.
