  • Recognize stroke signs and symptoms.
  • Explain the management of acute stroke from pre-hospital to acute care.
  • Describe the trajectory of care for patients with stroke.
  • Implement a stroke plan of care.
  • Understand supportive nursing care for patients with stroke.
  • Describe the requirements for stroke center certification by The Joint Commission.

About the Author:
Norma D. McNair, PhD, RN, SCRN, ACNS-BC, FAHA

Norma D. McNair, PhD, RN, SCRN, ACNS-BC, FAHA is an accomplished clinical nurse specialist with a focus in brain injury, including traumatic brain injury and stroke. She earned her bachelor’s degree from California State University - Sacramento, a certificate in neuroscience nursing from the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London, England, a master’s degree from Yale University School of Nursing, a post-masters nurse practitioner certificate from California State University - Long Beach, and her PhD from UCLA School of Nursing. Dr. McNair has held a variety of positions including staff nurse, charge nurse, interim director of evidence-based practice, and clinical nurse specialist. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and is a frequent presenter at local, national, and international conferences that focus on the care of neuroscience patients.
