Here's what you need to renew your New York Dental license

NEW! Updated Mandatory Child Abuse Training:
Updated Mandated Reporter Training Requirements. Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework. This law requires that mandated reporters, including those who have previously undergone the current training, complete the updated training curriculum by April 1, 2025.  Complete the updated curriculum here! NEW! DEA MATE ACT: 
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. 


Mandatory Subjects:

  • 2 hour- Oral Health Effects of Tobacco and Tobacco Products (one-time basis)
  • A State approved course in Dental Jurisprudence and Ethics (one-time basis)
  • A State approved Infection Control course (every 4 years)
  • A State approved course in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting (one-time basis by 4/1/2025)


Additional Requirements for DEA Licensees:

  • 3 hours - Pain management, palliative care, and addiction (every 3 years)

 

Certification in CPR must be completed and maintained:

  • You may count a CPR course for up to three hours.  A copy of your CPR card is proof of completion.  
  • You may count a CPR course which includes training in the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for up to four and one-half hours. A copy of your CPR/AED or BLS card is proof of completion.

Infection control and barrier precaution required every 4 years (# of hours not specified); identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment (2 hrs) is to be completed 1 time only prior to initial licensure; the oral health effects of tobacco and tobacco products (2 hrs) is to be completed 1 time only prior to initial licensure; dental jurisprudence and ethics (one time only).

Online Limitations

Beginning on July 1, 2008, dental hygienists are required to complete at least seven-twelfths of their hours via live courses (14 of the 24 contact hours required for a three-year registration).
