About the Course      
Child abuse and neglect remains a significant problem for us all in the U.S. as well as in Pennsylvania. Approximately 3.5 million children in the U.S. were the subjects of at least one child abuse or neglect report (United States Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2019). In Pennsylvania alone, there were 46,208 reports of suspected child and student abuse in 2017 (HHS, 2019). This course provides the details of the identification, assessment, and reporting of child abuse and reviews Pennsylvania state laws regarding child abuse and neglect.

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate possible clinical, behavioral, and physical indicators of suspected child abuse and neglect to determine whether there is reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect.   
  • Explain criteria of mandated reporters in accordance with Pennsylvania law.   
  • Apply the current requirements and protocol for reporting child abuse or neglect in Pennsylvania.
  • Describe the scope of human trafficking and identify risk factors for potential human trafficking victims.

About the Author    
Marilou Erb, JD, PhD has multiple degrees, including B.S. in both Forensic Psychology and Psychology, a Masters in Psychology as well as a Masters degree in Forensic Psychology, a Juris Doctorate.  She is currently in the final stages of her dissertation on the topic of Exploratory analysis of criminal profiling protocols and techniques and will soon her Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology/Criminal Justice Concentration.
