This basic-level course includes the pathophysiology etiology, risk factors, and pathology of osteoarthritis of the knee. It discusses the diagnostic procedures, including the criteria for classification, history, physical examination, imaging, and laboratory tests. Goals of management and treatment are presented, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacology, surgical alternatives, self-help programs, and non-traditional alternatives.

Anne Ahlman, MPT,
received a Bachelors of Science degree in 1983 from University of CA, Davis and a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy from University of California, San Francisco in 1992. She is a practicing CA licensed physical therapist in Mountain View, CA and previously served as director of Rehabilitation and Lead Physical Therapist at Idylwood Convelescent Hospital in Sunnyvale, CA. As a clinical instructor, she has taught and trained first-year PT students. She is an AHA registered therapist in classic Hippotherapy; she has given numerous presentations on on that topic and in the areas of orthopedics, sports medicine and vestibular dysfunction. She is a past member of the California chapter of the APTA and published her master thesis in 1992 on “Effectiveness of Vestibular Exercise Therapy” under her maiden name of Westgate with a grant from the California Chapter of the APTA. She has written numerous articles, served as physical therapy editor for the journal Today in PT
and is published in the Journal of Applied Physiology
Gail Bryant, RN, MSN, CRRN, is a registered nurse with a bachelor's Degree in Nursing Science from the University of Michigan and a Master's Degree in Nursing Science from the University of Texas. In addition she has a nursing certification in rehabilitation from the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses. Gail is a tenured Associate Professor at the College of Santa Fe and was chairperson in the Department of Nursing for two years from 1987 to 1989. As an educator she received the prestigious teaching ward "Burlington Teacher of Excellence Award" for her contributions to teaching courses in the areas of medical surgical and clinical nursing. She has continually worked as a charge nurse on the Physical Rehabilitation Unit and the Orthopedic and Neurosurgical Unit of St Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe New Mexico. As an author she has written several chapters on "Modalities: Immobilization with Casts Braces and Splints" for such textbooks as Orthopedic Nursing and Orthopedic Journal. Recently she published an article on "Stump Care" in the American Journal of Nursing. As a successful biomedical writer and educator she is frequently asked to do research lecture and write in the areas of disease and rehabilitation.
