People with serious mental illness may experience various problems that interfere with community living. Comprehensive services have been developed to support these clients live successfully in the community. This course presents the history of deinstitutionalization and describes characteristics of people with severe mental illness. Information is provided on two currently used case management models: clinical case management and assertive community treatment. These approaches integrate a broad array of treatments to help decrease repeat psychiatric hospitalizations facilitate living in the community and support clients in their efforts to maintain a high quality of life. 

Course Objectives

  • Explain the concept of psychiatric rehabilitation.
  • Identify interventions used when working with clients who have serious mental illness.
  • Discuss clinical case management and assertive community treatment models.
  • Describe the characteristics of persons with serious mental illness.
Lynne A. Kellner, PhD, received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1994. She has worked as an outpatient psychologist providing group and individual counseling to clients in recovery from serious mental illness. Currently she is Associate Professor of Behavioral Sciences at Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg MA.
Mark Holter, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare. After receiving his doctorate from Columbia University he served as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Michigan’s Research Development Center on Poverty, Risk, and Mental Health. Dr. Holter’s overarching research goal is to produce knowledge that facilitates reintegration for persons with severe mental illness into normal life roles such as education, employment, and community living. He has developed nationally recognized expertise in the methodology of program evaluation, especially issues of program model fidelity, and in assessing the costs and resources necessary to deliver such programs. Dr. Holter publishes widely in professional journals and served as principal and co-principal investigator on a range of federally and state funded investigations of mental health services research.
