The incidence of rotator cuff tears (RCTs) is expected to increase as the population over the age of 65 continues to grow, and will continue to contribute to disability, poor physical function, and increased healthcare costs. The purpose of this course is to educate RNs and APRNs on the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff, the pathophysiology of rotator cuff tears, symptoms, assessment, diagnostic testing, nonsurgical and surgical treatment, management and rehabilitation.
- Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff and the pathophysiology of rotator cuff tears.
- Discuss the appropriate assessment and diagnostic testing of rotator cuff tears.
- Explain the evidence-based treatment and management of rotator cuff tears.
- Discuss the evidence-based rehabilitative management of rotator cuff tears.
Mary A. Smith, DNP, FNP-BC, ONP-C, is a board-certified family and orthopedic nurse practitioner and a registered nurse first assistant with Starkville Orthopedic Clinic in Starkville, Mississippi, and is an associate professor of nursing at Olivet Nazarene University. She received her BSN from the Mississippi University for Women, her MSN from the University of Mississippi School of Nursing, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing. Dr. Smith is a member of the Mississippi Nurses’ Association, Sigma Theta Tau, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, and the National Rural Health Association. She has published articles in a variety of nursing journals and textbooks.
