As delivery of healthcare becomes increasingly complex and locations where care is delivered more diverse, the challenges for providers of healthcare also become more substantial. Preventing acquisition and transmission of infection to patients, healthcare providers, and those in the community continues to be an area of focus among those receiving care as well as those paying for that care. The general public recognizes the value of the nursing profession, and they depend on nurses to protect them and trust them to get the job done. To accomplish this, nurses must continue to be well educated, competent, and demonstrate leadership in areas of practice that involve teamwork. It is not only the public demanding quality outcomes. Consumers and purchasers of healthcare have the same expectation of quality and reliability.
Purchasers of healthcare, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), are requiring reports of specific patient outcomes regarding healthcare-associated infection. It is a CMS requirement that healthcare facilities establish and maintain an Infection Prevention and Control Program that provides a safe and sanitary environment that helps prevent development and transmission of disease and infection to patients, healthcare personnel and others.
The purpose of this course is to provide healthcare workers with information that is fundamental to infection prevention and control practice central to the provision of safe patient care adaptable to any setting.
This course is an extraction of, and should not be taken in conjunction with Course #N1694 - Infection Prevention for New York Healthcare Professionals.
- Adhere to scientifically accepted principles and practices of infection prevention and control and oversee and monitor those personnel for whom the professional is responsible.
- Identify the modes and mechanisms of transmission of pathogenic organisms and strategies for preventing their transmission.
- Identify engineering and work practice controls that reduce the opportunity for patient and healthcare worker exposure to potentially infectious material.
- Identify the barriers and personal protective equipment that prevent patient and healthcare worker contact with potentially infectious material.
- Apply infection control principles and practices for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization to create and maintain a safe and hygienic environment for patient care.
- Identify strategies for preventing and controlling infectious and communicable diseases in healthcare workers.
Ruth M. Carrico, PhD, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, FSHEA, CIC, is an Associate Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner with the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and is the founding Associate Director of the Department of Medicine’s Global Health Initiative. Dr. Carrico has received training specific for healthcare epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in conjunction with the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. She served as the editor for the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC), in 2005 and 2009 and for the 2010 electronic version of the Text of Infection Control and Epidemiology. She currently serves as a reviewer for such publications as the American Journal of Infection Control and Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. Dr. Carrico has also served on the APIC National Board of Directors.
