This continuing education video course provides nurses with self-care strategies to cope with and prevent occupational burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma, thus enhancing career satisfaction and longevity. The course explains that nurses can develop compassion fatigue by personally experiencing the pain of their patients and families and because of the demands of the changing healthcare environment. Consequences can be serious, including an increased risk of committing medical errors. Nurses will learn to be aware of what contributes to burnout: lack of engagement in the workplace, a heavy workload, a nonsupportive environment, staff conflicts, and time pressures. The course outlines a resilience-based healthcare and behavioral healthcare model that emphasizes maintaining optimism, finding a feeling of connection, keeping a positive attitude, maintaining boundaries, and cherishing moments of laughter and joy. Nurses will learn to maintain cognitive flexibility, be alert to their critical inner voices, and brainstorm positive behaviors. Ways to develop a positive attitude are explored, such as friendships, spirituality, and problem-solving. The importance of setting boundaries is discussed, which requires a foundation of personal rules and ethical guidelines. The elements of optimism are explored, including realistic outlook, hopefulness, and enthusiasm. Finally, the course describes self-compassion activities to enhance self-care. Electronic and printable handouts and a study guide aid the learner throughout the presentation. 

Iowa Nurses - This course is not accepted for continuing education credit by the Iowa Board of Nursing. The content is considered self-care, which does not meet Rule 5.3(2)a. Criteria related to appropriate subject matter.

Barbara Rubel, MA, BCETS, CBC is a leader in the field of compassion fatigue and coping with traumatic loss.  Barbara received a BS in Psychology and MA in Community Health with a concentration in Thanatology. Board Certified Expert Traumatic Stress, Diplomat, American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, and Certified Bereavement Specialist. Barbara’s website is griefworkcenter.com. As a bereavement specialist, Barbara has supported terminally ill individuals, provided support to those who were impacted by 9/11, facilitated anticipatory and sudden loss bereavement support groups and taught undergraduate and master’s level courses at Brooklyn College. Barbara currently presents trainings on traumatic death and compassion fatigue.
