Pediatric patients with complex healthcare needs are a unique and growing population. Given the current awareness that dental caries are still a significant problem in the pediatric population and that they result from an imbalance of multiple factors, the dental team has the responsibility to identify and educate patients and their families about this disease. This intermediate-level course provides dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants with information on selected morbidities that are typical in children and adolescents, and aids clinicians in developing rational thought processes for gathering information from these patients and their caregivers.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss the importance of preventing dental disease in pediatric patients with complex medical conditions.
  • Identify the complex medical conditions that often affect the pediatric dental population.
  • Describe current medical therapies for treating or managing pediatric patients with certain complex medical conditions.
  • Discuss how different complex medical conditions affect the dental treatment of pediatric patients with these conditions.
  • Describe developmental disabilities that affect the pediatric population and their implications for providing dental care to this population.

Paul Subar, DDS, EdD, is an assistant professor of diagnostic sciences and director of the Special Care Clinic/Hospital Dentistry Program at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. His primary interest is access to oral health for patients with special needs, including those with severe medical, developmental, and psychosocial conditions. His work focuses on the delivery of dental care in an operating room setting, as well as daily operations of the Clinic/Hospital Dentistry Program, student education, and several areas of scholarship. Dr. Subar is codirec­tor for the Pipelines Professions and Practice Grant from the California Endowment for the University, which focuses on community-based dental programs, cultural competency issues, and the recruitment of underrepresented minorities and low-income students into the dental field. He is the first recipient of the California Dental Foundation’s annual Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award and a recent graduate of the California HealthCare Foundation’s Health Care Leadership Program. Dr. Subar graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, with baccalaureate degrees in both biochemistry and molecular biology. He received his DDS from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed his hospi­tal training at the UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Subar also holds a doctorate in education and professional leadership from the University of the Pacific Gladys L. Benerd School of Education.

Robert A. Frank, DMD, is a 1968 graduate of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He has been in the private practice of pediatric dentistry since 1972, with offices in Medford and Westford, Massachusetts. In addition, Dr. Frank has been a member of the senior staff in the dental department at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he holds the position of senior associate in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Frank has an appointment as clinical instructor in the Department of Developmental Biology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. In addition to other professional activities, Dr. Frank served for eight years as a member of the Council on Scientific Affairs for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Zameera Fida, DMD, is a full-time staff member at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is board certified by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and a Fellow of the AAPD. She received a bachelor of science degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Florida. Dr. Fida received her DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). She was nominated by the HSDM faculty for the Pierre Fauchard Academy Scholarship. She is a member of the Aesculapian Club of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fida received her certificate in pediatric dentistry from Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH). She teaches at the pre-doctoral and doctoral level at HSDM and BCH, which contains a comprehensive curriculum for dental students on the treatment of the patient with special healthcare needs. She also sees patients with special healthcare needs and instructs pediatric dental residents. Dr. Fida is a reviewer for the journals Pediatric Dentistry and Journal of Dental Education and is a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (Committee on Predoctoral Education), Massachusetts Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (Executive Board Member), and the Massachusetts Dental Society. Her current research interests include trauma, dental education, and caries prevention.
