Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are commonly encountered in dental practice. This course presents the epidemiology, prevention, general treatment considerations, and protocols for management of the full array of TDI, allowing the dental team to triage, treat, and provide appropriate follow-up care for these injuries.

Zameera Fida, DMD, is a full-time staff member at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is board certified by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and a Fellow of the AAPD. She received a bachelor of science degree in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Florida. Dr. Fida received her DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). She was nominated by the HSDM faculty for the Pierre Fauchard Academy Scholarship. She is a member of the Aesculapian Club of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fida received her certificate in pediatric dentistry from Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH). She teaches at the predoctoral and doctoral level at HSDM and BCH, which contains a comprehensive curriculum for dental students on the treatment of the patient with special healthcare needs. She also sees patients with special healthcare needs and instructs pediatric dental residents. Dr. Fida is a reviewer for the journals Pediatric Dentistry and Journal of Dental Education and is a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (Committee on Predoctoral Education 2018 to present), Massachusetts Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (Executive Board Member 2014 to present), and the Massachusetts Dental Society. Her current research interests include trauma, dental education, and caries prevention.
Howard L. Needleman, DMD, is a pediatric dentist who has been in both clinical practice and academic dentistry since 1974. He graduated cum laude from HSDM in 1972 and completed his postdoctoral residency in pediatric dentistry at BCH in 1974. Dr. Needleman has received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal for Scholastic Excellence, the Dr. Norman B. Nesbett Award for Excellence in Clinical Dentistry, the Award for Exceptional Interest in the Development of the Orofacial Complex, the Distinguished Faculty Award, and the Silver Anniversary Award from HSDM. Dr. Needleman is currently a clinical professor of oral and developmental biology at HSDM and a senior associate in dentistry at BCH where he is actively engaged in clinical research and teaching. In addition, Dr. Needleman is a founding partner of Chestnut Dental Associates, a multispecialty group dental practice in which he has practiced pediatric dentistry for more than 30 years. Dr. Needleman has served on numerous state and national professional committees and has authored more than 60 original articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has also edited numerous dental textbooks and authored multiple chapters in both medical and dental texts.
