This intermediate-level course focuses on the HIV/AIDS illness from a medical perspective. It describes in detail the way HIV replicates itself in the body, early manifestations, and the progression from HIV to AIDS. Close attention is paid to the history of antiretroviral medications and the current drug regimens for treating HIV and AIDS. The goals of antiretroviral therapy are presented and professional responses to concerns about non-adherence to medical regimens are discussed. The course describes how HIV is transmitted from one person to another including from mother to child and through occupational exposure, sexual contact, and the sharing of drug use equipment. Ways to prevent or reduce the likelihood of transmission via these routes are also described. Technical terms are used throughout the text and a glossary is provided. Brief attention is paid to psychosocial, legal, and ethical issues related to working with people who have HIV or AIDS by providing basic information on recognizing psychosocial responses, promoting coping, and understanding ethical obligations; however, this course is not intended to provide advanced information on the mental health counseling of people with HIV or AIDS. This course is useful for behavioral health professionals in medical and other settings who seek to increase their medical knowledge about the HIV/AIDS illness, who work with individuals who have HIV or AIDS, or who are in positions to educate others about HIV/AIDS illness, transmission, and prevention.

Eileen S. O’Neill, PhD, RN, is professor emeritus at the College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Her areas of expertise are pathophysiology, advanced practice nursing, and nursing inquiry. Her clinical practice area is care of the adult patient. Dr. O’Neill’s research program centers on clinical and patient decision making, including the role of technology in improving patient care. She has been published in several leading nursing journals.
