What is the difference between CEUs and Contact Hours?  Which do I need?

Both terms are used to describe the awarding of credit for continuing education activities, but they have very different meanings.

The term “contact hours” is used with nursing continuing education.

1 contact hour = 60 minutes of an organized activity.

The term “CEU” is used to describe credit utilizing a measurement of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).

1 CEU is equal to 10 contact hours.

The ANCC Accreditation Program does not use the term CEU.

*Nursing measures continuing education in contact hours, not CEUs.
